Gary is your delightful pilot and tour guide. He has flown gliders for 35 years and holds the Oregon record for highest Glider flight at 28,000 feet. His first exposure to sailplanes was in January of 1967 when he first read a fantastic article in National Geographic magazine. He was 14 years old and had always been interested in aviation but at this point knew a sailplane (or glider) was what he really wanted to fly. Ten years later, in 1977, he had the time and the money so I found the local glider operation, began taking lessons, and has been consumed by the sport ever since. He has been the President of the local club several times and in the early 90s convinced the club to sponsor the Soaring Society of America (SSA) National Convention, which we did in 1998. Gary received his Commercial Glider Rating in 1990 and Instructors Rating (CFIG) in 2002. He has over 2000 hours in gliders and started his own commercial soaring operation in Hood River, OR in 2003. After many successful years in Hood River, he moved the operation to what was Turf Soaring School, north of Phoenix, Arizona, in December of 2013.
